Timeless Principle No. 07

Prosperity is the foundation of stability.

Author, Veteran Wg Cdr Vijay Dhanraj Chattur

A poor kingdom cannot remain a strong kingdom.

When we think of national strength, we often think of military power or political leadership. Acharya Kautilya looked deeper. He believed that the true strength of a nation rests upon the prosperity of its people.

That is why he gave extraordinary importance to agriculture, trade, infrastructure, irrigation, industry and fair taxation. These were not merely administrative functions — they were the foundation of a strong and stable state.

His insight remains remarkably relevant today. Prosperity creates opportunities. Poverty limits choices. A prosperous nation can invest in education, innovation, public welfare and defence. Economic strength gives a country the resilience to withstand adversity.

The same principle applies to organisations. Institutions become stronger when they create lasting value before they seek to distribute it. Sustainable success is built through productivity, trust and long-term growth.

Acharya Kautilya believed that the ruler's duty was not merely to collect revenue, but to create the conditions from which prosperity naturally arose.

The prosperity of the people is the strongest foundation of the state.
