Wise leaders seek wise counsel.

The strength of a decision often depends upon the wisdom that shapes it.

Leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about asking the right people the right questions before making important decisions.

Acharya Kautilya believed that consultation was a discipline of wise leadership, not a sign of weakness. He advised rulers to deliberate with trusted ministers, experts and experienced advisers, because decisions affecting the welfare of the state were too important to rest on one person's judgment alone.

But he also warned that advice is valuable only when it comes from people of integrity who have the courage to speak honestly. Leaders surrounded by those who merely agree with them gradually lose the ability to distinguish wisdom from flattery.

The same principle applies today. Strong organisations encourage constructive disagreement. The best leaders value colleagues who challenge assumptions rather than simply confirm them.

The final decision always belongs to the leader. Yet decisions shaped by thoughtful counsel are almost always wiser than those made in isolation.

Acharya Kautilya understood that no individual, however gifted, possesses complete knowledge. The wisest leaders are therefore not those who know everything, but those who know whom to ask.
